Sertraline batch recalled after pack found containing citalopram

Generics company Amarox is recalling a batch of its Sertraline 100mg film-coated tablets as a precautionary measure after a pack was found to contain another antidepressant.

The MHRA said today (April 28) that a patient had complained after finding both one blister strip of Citalopram 40mg tablets and their prescribed sertraline in a pack they received.

Pharmacists and other healthcare professionals involved in dispensing are advised to identify and contact any patients who may have received an affected pack (batch number V2500425).

MHRA chief safety officer Alison Cave advised patients: “If you have been prescribed Sertraline 100mg tablets and have received batch number V2500425, please check the carton contains the right medication.

“If the blister strips inside the carton are labelled Citalopram 40mg, please contact your pharmacy as soon as possible.

“If they are labelled Sertraline 100mg, no further action is needed.”

Ms Cave warned that patients who accidentally take citalopram instead of or in addition to sertraline “may experience some heightened serotonergic side effects” including nausea, headache, sleep changes and mild anxiety.
