New pharmacy minister announced in cabinet reshuffle

Maggie Throup, a former Government whip and trained scientist, has been appointed the new minister with responsibility for pharmacy in Boris Johnson’s cabinet reshuffle.

Ms Throup (pictured), who takes over from Jo Churchill, will oversee prevention, public health and primary care and will also take on Nadhim Zahawi’s role heading up the Covid vaccination programme, ensuring the over-50s get a booster by the end of the year.

Ms Throup has chaired the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Obesity, was secretary for the APPG on Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery and has sat on the Health Select Committee.

She graduated from Manchester University with a biology degre, worked as a biomedical scientist at the Calderdale Health Authority and has been a vocal supporter of more diagnostic testing to reduce the amount of wrong-prescribed antibiotics.

Posting on Twitter, Ms Churchill thanked her DHSC colleagues and offered a "big thank you to fellow ministers and key stakeholders whom I worked with in unprecedented circumstances to protect our NHS & deliver a national vaccination rollout".

Ms Throup tweeted: "Honoured to have been appointed public health minister at such a critical moment for our Country as we begin the huge task of building back better from the pandemic.

"I can't wait to get stucj into my new portfolio, rolling out the Covid vaccine booster programme and supporting Boris Johnson and Sajid Javid to deliver lasting reforms to health and social care."
